Prop shaft/axle groaning - where to start 200 1985

I've experienced bad U-jts on everything from my MGB (relatively dainty ones) to the biggest rental truck I could find. Interpreting noises is not an exact science, but the MGB and other cars went "clink" and the truck went "clank". Either way it was a metallic, ringing noise and not the dull thud implied by your description "clunk".
