Okay here's the story...

The M40 4 speed/M41 4spd+OD were stock standard from 75 to 80. I've owned 2 GT's (78 & 80) and 2 DL's (both 78) with the hard plastic gear shifter, toggle switch O/D, smaller oil capacity and shorter throws.

The M45 4 speed/M46 4 spd+OD hit the shores in 1981, and some late production Bertone's and 264's came with M46's. The newer boxes had larger oil capacity, slightly longer throws, crappy soft knobs that broke easily and a pushbutton O/D when applicable.

All 4 gearboxes are fundamentally the same. An M46 or M45 is easily and quite commonly transplanted into an older car as all the dimensions for length and bellhousing fitting were identical. I think you'll be surprised when you check your owners manual.

Realistically there's no real need to know what one you have, they're all bulletproof and just need to have their fluids changed and topped up to the fill hole every couple of years.
