It's good to hear about survival stories like yours. This is further testimony to the over-engineering that Volvo invests in their vehicles. I'm sure your cylinders got a decent cleaning and I'm glad nothing was cracked or broken when it happened. However, I'd advise performing a compression test on your car after a week or so of driving. -just to make sure that your head gasket is ok.
A friend of mine in college performed a similar watery excursion with a 1998 Chrysler minivan (less than 5,000 miles on the odometer at the time of incident). We drained about 2 gallons of tan fluid from the crankcase, changed the air filter, removed water from cylinders and intake, and it was enough to drive to the dealership. After receiving a new head gasket and 2 pistons, it was running like new.
God bless, and drive safely.
Fitz Fitzgerald.
