Geez Ron,
You're so polite to have not suggested your own alternator conversion kit. So I will.

Converting to an alternator seems a sure way to cure charging problems on a nearly 40 year old system, and you can keep your old parts and put it back to stock if you feel like it. I havn't tried Ron's kit, but judging from other bits of his I have seen, I'm sure its top notch.
