proper clutch cable? 140-160 1972

My '72 164e has a very stiff clutch (I've only had the car a few months) and I'm getting conflicting advice on the problem. I've been told by one mechanic that it has the wrong clutch cable. I now have a eom nos cable, approximately 27" long. A second mechanic confirms that the car has a "short" cable in it. Can anyone confirm the proper cable length?
