Well... I'd definetely get that choke thing sorted. If even not get it working, at least see that it is fully off all the time.

As for plugs, I've heard good things about NKG... never tried 'em myself though. I do know that when I was schlepping pizzas in my 1800, I would sometimes buy other brands of plugs, and end up having to put my old Boschs back in halfway through a shift. After doing so about 4 times, I gave up and quit changing plugs, because nothing would last... except for the Boschs... which have been replaced, then put back in about 4 times, and probably have about 75,000 miles on 'em.

Distributor work is easy... If you havn't adjusted the points, or aren't familiar with how or why, its high time you learn. See if you can't find a used distributor to practice on. Get some new points for it, and install/adjust 'em on your kitchen table. Whenever I do a tunup, I pull the distributor just cuz its easier to get perfectly right.

Keep in mind that for ~$500, you could do a lot of work to you 142 to make it more reliable, and more livable.

Surely there is someone in your area that would be glad to help you with some basics in exchange for beer money. Make a saturday afternoon out of it. I sure would if you weren't 1200 miles away.
