charging trouble

I know I'm duplicating Chick's info, but I had it all ready to go...

1) My battery light on the dash doesn't come on at all.
The bulb grounds thru the small red wire at D+, then thru the alternator and it's ground wire.

2) i read in the FAQ's about the "exciter wire" but I don't know how to test for it.
Take the red "exciter"wire off D+, ground it, then check the light with Key on.
Light ON = OK up to the alternator, check resistance from D+ to ground.
Light OFF = open between Instruments and red wire. Check at firewall 8-pin plug

3) I also measured avout 8 v crossing the small ground wire from the back of the alt to the
engine block.

Need more detail. Maybe open ground wire? (would cause #1, and thus no charging)
