My theory is that because of play on the valve guide, everytime the valve closes, it closes in a slightly different way, thereby enhancing wear on the seat. Because of this wear the spring tension decreases enhancing the wear even more, sort of exponentially increasing the wear. (The valve guides on the worn out seats had a lot more play then the not-worn ones)
