Thanks, David. Given the non-relevance of the idle air control, it must have been the throttle body condition. Reason I didn't think so is I had it off before and "cleaned" it. I saw onlt a trace of carbon around the butterfly and removed it. But it didn't help at that time. When I took it off again to get at the IAC, I cleaned the throttle body again with lots of carb cleaner. Maybe that time I got into the right areas/ports/crevices.
