There are two types (at least) of wheels on water cooled VWs. The 4 lug wheels are on all A1 through most A3 model cars (76 rabbit through 2001 or so cabrio.). The A3 cars with the V6 and all A4 cars have 5 bolt lugs. This means that a golf or jetta made in 1997 with a V6 or any golf, jetta, new beetle made after 1999.5 (1998 for the NB) will have the new style 5 bolt wheels. I'm not sure what's up with the wheels on the audi based cars, the quantum and the passat and the fox and such; the passats with the V6 have 5 bolt wheels but I'm not sure if they are the same pattern as the A4 platform cars. Similarly, I think the Audi TT wheels will fit on a VW based A4 (golf, jetta, etc).

This isn't to say that these 5 bolt wheels would fit; it would be nice if they did because I've got a 2001 golf and a 73 142 and a 68 145, but it isn't true that all VWs have 4 bolt wheels.

I've also seen late model mercedes's with volvo turbo 5 spoke rims; I pretty much did a double take when I saw that.
