The picture in Art's post shows the ballast resistor in a 240 that has the coil mounted on the right side of the engine bay. Is that what you have?
The resistor is the tube-looking thing with a wire out of each end. There may be one mounted on the RH side, even if your coil is mounted on the LH side.
It had a function back then, and newer models do not have one. Voltage to the the coil is reduced by the ballast resistor while the engine is running. When the car is being started, the ballast resistor is by-passed though an additional terminal on the starter, so that voltage reduction due to starter load is offset.
If your car has said resistor, put a jumper across the terminals and see if your problem goes away. Yes = open resistor. Replace the resistor.
The system is designed to use full voltage only when starting, so it is possible that a constant diet of full power will damage the coil.
