engine 1800

What is the best engine powerwise/ sizewise to really make the 1800 fly? I am restoring a 68 and would like to really up the HP and performance, more than my dad's stock restored 72.

Has anyone heard of putting a ford 9 inch rear in the 1800, I have heard that it's been done to the 240. What are the advantages difficulties associated with this process?
