temp guage jumpy

I have read the temp comp board archives and dont see what this 91 740 is doing.

It jumps from low to middle constantly in quick jerks like it is losing signal and regaining it. The flame trap on this one was stopped up and oil is everywhere. Suspect oily contacts. Is this logical?
What would you check first?
