I was having what I thought was a starter problem - I jumpered the hot to the starter and it didn't work, so I replaced it with one I had on the shelf from an 84 rustbucket. Then I refreshed some of the wiring down there including the main grounds and no problems since. Turns out it was just the wiring that was bad, especially the grounds, which is why jumpering to the old starter didn't work. Now I have a starter from and 87 on the shelf. So, I now have a 20 year old starter from a rustbucket starting my car without fault every morning - I would say they are an extremely reliable part.
