One thing you can do is look at their feedback. The only way they can
beat that is to change names.
The mileage could be fake but it could also be a shadow. The things I would
look out for include:
Clock looks fake
Engine perhaps too clean
Automatic tranny
From New York
Other than that it is a very nice looking car. You can protect yourself from
fraud by using an escrow service. If they won't accept that, you can take
that as a tip.
I've been duped a couple times on ebay stuff but most I was to blame. The
worst was when I bought a Volvo B20 gasket set from a guy going as KAWEAVER.
I put the packet on the shelf in early 1999 without opening it. When I opened
it a couple years later to use it I found that although it said "Volvo B20
Gasket Set" in black marker on the outside of the box, inside was a gasket
set for some kinda Honda. I sent it back to him but he disclaimed responsibility, saying I had waited too long. By that time Ebay had no record
of the transaction and thus was unable/unwilling to help.
I'd say before buying a car on ebay you should either inspect it yourself or
have someone who knows cars and whom you can trust do it for you. I bought
a 66 122 wagon on ebay myself for $1005 and conclude that the leather upholstery
alone is worth what I paid for the car. Its body is also a LOT better than
the one I have been driving (including 14 years in Panama). That car was in
Tulsa, only 45 minutes away.
