First of all, it's bad for the AMM to be plugged in while the key is on. It may not smoke anything the first time, or the first 5 times, but it will damage it, and the 83-84 cars don't need any help killing AMM's.
I would closely inspect that plug to the AMM however, and make certain all the connections are clean, corrosion free, and the little fingers are very tight to the pins of the AMM.
Same with the pins at the distributor plug. Also, I recently had a similar problem with an 87, and it was a plug right near the coil. I know the 83-84 has a totally different arrangement there, but there may be an equivalent plug in the coil wiring harness, causing this sort of behavior. At least it's easier to see it on your car.
