I'd start it at at least 20° initial advance and go from there.
If it knocks/pinks that is too far, but if not you can go further.
Most of the time I have set mine for fastest idle it has been pretty
good.
I don't disconnect anything before setting timing. Saves adjusting and
readjusting idle speed.
