Yes,it could be that simple.
On the back of the alternator are three wires. The fat red one connected on by a nut on a stud carries the charging current.
There is a thin black one from the frame of the alternator to a bolt holding the mounting bracket to the block. This grounds the alternator to the block.
There is a thin red wire connected to a spade lug, this is the exciter wire and if it is not well connected, you get no charge. That's likely the one which you connected and which made the difference. Easy, wasn't it??
