Idle higher after muffler replacement

Are you saying your car doesn't have a tach??? What are you reading 1500 RPM on, then?
There's a link between back pressure and idle speed, but this sounds extreme; I'd look for intake air leaks. If there was that much back pressure, the engine would really be choked at higher throttle openings.
There's no risk of doing any permanent damage during the idle adjustment (keep your necktie out of the fan).
