burned up speedometer 200 1989

My 1989 Volvo 240 DL has burnt up it's speedometer. More precisely the circuit card next to the speedometer. It is a KX10042 instrument cluster. First the speedometer bounces around, then the smoke, car dies. Car will restart. Took readings of the electrical hookups and didn't notice anything that seemed unusual. (No grounds or shorts.) A second unit burned up the exact same way. I measured the rear axle sensor unit in my daughter's Volvo and got the same resistance reading.
