What is that 'hump' the pedal goes over on its way to the floor?

I am milking the last few miles out of my 200.000 mile clutch/trany /od before they are replaced in a week or two. .The clutch cable finally broke about a week ago. I replaced it with a Isrealli replacement from AutoZone. (oem will go in when the clutch/tranny/od are replaced)
When the cable was first installed, because of clutch wear, i had to adjust the adjuster nut all the way to the end of the threads, leaving no room for further adjustment. This worked for about a week, untill the cable stretched and setteled into place. I went to adjust, and had no threads left to adjust with..

I made a spacer on the clutch fork end of the cable by threading a bolt between the rubber spacer and the big metal c-shaped retainer clamp thing that holds the cable into place on the fork.. This allowed me to adjust the nut back down to about a third of the adjuster bolt..
Now when adjusted to the point were the transmission does not grind when shifting, the clutch pedal has unusual pedal travel.
When pushed in it travels in a normal way for about 4/5 of the distance, then it gets stiffer, like you are at the end of the pedal travel, then if more effort is applied, the pedal sort of "pushes past a tight spot" and travels about a fifth further.
When starting from standstill will not shift into first if i do not got the extra fifth forward of pedal travel.
But once moving shifts with less than 4/5 pedal travel.

What is that "hump" the pedal goes over on its way to the floor?.

Again, the entire works will be swapped soon.
My next dilemma is whether or not to do the trannsmission swap/ clutch replacement myself or not.
But my big concern at this moment is What is that hump the pedal goes over on the way to the floor?
I hope this makes sense
