AC Evaporator bad? If so, what to do?

Replacing the evap is a too big a job to do based on a hunch. The dye is good to pinpoint a leak but only if the leak is visible. In this case your mechanic should use a "sniffer" to isolate the leak to the evapoator. It sniffs and detects the presence of very small concentrations of freon in the air.
