'Check Engine' Light 900 1994

Hi, after 9 years and 99K miles my baby all of a sudden turned on the "Check Engine" light. I read in the manual that it has somethihng to do with emissions. Does anyone have any more insight into this? Can i turn the light off by myself? Any other suggestions?
