Rear Spring Replacements/Mods 444-544 1965

I was wondering if anybody has ever used anything other than original equipment as a replacement for rear springs in a PV. I figure that my originals are probably pretty sacked out & will be inadequate with adult passengers in the back seat or pulling a motorcycle or pop-up tent trailer. Progressively wound springs would be ideal but I'm not aware of any being offered. Or has anybody experimented with those rubber spacers that fit between the spring coils, effectively increasing the spring rate?
