Oil changes: time vs. mileage

There's chemical interaction between engine oil and crankcase metals that produce acids. So clean oil left in a crankcase over time degrades and the acids will start to attack bearing surfaces and impair lubrication ability of the oil. Or so I'm told. Oil is cheap, repairs aren't.
