Transmission problems 200

I notice that when I drive 86 240 wagan it makes a wierd whinning noise. Then I noticed that it drives sort of sluggish. Well last night I got in front of my house and then all of a sudden I pushed on the gas and the car would not go and the harder I pushed the louder the noise got. Also at times it will not go into reverse. My car will move intermittantly. Does this mean the transmission is out and how much does a rebuilt cost or should I just junk my car?
