So I have a B20 that was built by a pretty competent mechanic-
at least, I thought he was, until I took the timing gear cover off!
The driving gear has a dimple on one tooth, and the driven fiber gear has a corresponding dimple on a tooth root- just like you'd expect. Except that the car's not timed that way. Instead, the drilled hole on the crank gear is lined up with a scribed line (looked hand- scribed to me) on the fiber gear. And the cam timing achieved this way is one tooth off the 'official' marks.
The engine has a VV71 (mild performance) cam in it (same mechanic) and otherwise looks great- the bearing shells are nice and even, cam lobes look great, lifters, bores, piston skirts, etc are all good.
WHY would the cam timing be off? Is there some 'official secret' that I missed- like 'oh yeah, the timing mark on a bunch of those gears is wrong' or something?
Help!
Thanks!
