The five wires to the ICM are usually wrapped in what looks like vinyl tape, and often I have seen that tape almost rotted away, but the insulation on the inside wires is OK.

OTOH, the 3-wire harness that's usually yelled about has one only good wire - the fat (6 gauge?) red one that carries the heavy charging current to the battery.

The other two wires are of the group from the gray connector, all of which have the crumbling insulation problem. Thus it's one or both of those two that give us the fits.
