What am I doing wrong? 120-130 1967

Why would compression affect which metering needle you use?

Cams and bore I could see since they would change the air
velocity or volume of fuel required, but I thought that squishing
the mixture more before buring it would be independent of how
much fuel is required for a given volume of air.
