You need to spray some PB Blaster down around the base of each plug. Do this a few times before you attempt to remove them again. When they've been in for a while, they tend to get corroded in place. I've seen some old plugs be very sticky coming out. I have managed to get them out without issue. One problem I have come across several times is that #4 plug (rear) is apparently easy for people to cross-thread, and of course that's tough to fix in the car. I always use a small 3/8 ratchet and a 3-inch extension. Always start your plugs by hand and I do use a bit of Never-seize on the threads. I've never had a plug loosen on a VOlvo (although that did happen on a few of my VW's).
Be patient with them, and I think you will be ok.
