Cam profiles

Does changing the cam profile in AN engine (not talking specific engines... just in general) allow it to yield more power? Not to be confused with shifting the power band, I just want to know if the max output is increased. Does a more aggressive profile (without changing the overall lift) allow a higher peak horsepower? Philip? Anyone?
