mine's always shifted hard from 1-2 unless i get it in the 'sweet spot' which is somewhere at about medium acceleration.
2-3 is almost always smooth for me
and 3-4(OD) is once again the sweet spot thing.
the 1-2 lurch/hard shift is documented in the FAQ. but to save you the trouble of looking (and my own trouble too ;) ) it's a little ball in the valve body that has become worn down that causes it. it's not bad for the car, and in fact, may actually be better. supposedly saves wear on the clutch pack when you have a hard shift. so it's up to you whether you want to replace it or not.
it's also possible that your kickdown cable might be maladjusted so it's shifting too late or too early? i find that my 1-2 shift is smoothest if i have the throttle depressed so that it shifts from 1-2 at around 2500RPM and not exceeding 3K.
