Had the same thing on my '86 245 when daughter had it to college in '96-'97. The plastic sheath around the cable was cracked, moisture seeped in and froze. After the car warmed up, it woorked fine. But first thing on a freezing morning and she couldn't push the gas pedal down.

I installed a new cable, it's been fine since.
