When was the last time that you had the ignition stuff replaced? -The spark plugs, the spark plug wires, the distributor cap and rotor. A weak spark can do what you describe. It can make your car sputter when you try to accelerate, and it is worse when cold and/or wet.

Also if your fuel filter hasn't been replaced in a long time, it's a good idea to replace that. These are all routine maintenance items anyways.
