Just a quick addendum regarding Question #1. Sounds just like my car, same problem. Probably the thermostat, I'm changing mine next weekend. After checking antifreeze try that second. They're cheap, if that doesn't work then move on to something else...

BTW - if the heater is working properly it will roast your buns!!!
