I'm still using the generator in my 122 and it works OK with occasional
maintenance.

A noisy alternator either has bad bearings, the pulley is coming loose,
or the mounting is not sufficiently firm. If I were you I'd get out there
with a flashlight and see if it is still bolted up right and the belt is
good and tight. If the belt is loose you could get those symptoms.
