What is normal oil consumption (if any)?

3/4 of a quart in 3500 miles sounds OK to me. Thats about what I use on my 88 740 with 266K miles. Not sure why you would check when cold, guess thats OK for consumption comparison as long as the benchmark check was also done when cold.
conventional wisdom is to check oil when hot. I suppose this is to ensure that there is sufficient reserve supply of oil in the crankcase under normal running conditions.
