Alternatives to Volvo (be nice) ?

Thanks to all for the edifying advice. Some comments:

Interesting ... no one mentioned Mercedes.

I am not currently a DIY owner.

I have considered sway bars. I thought Bilsteins resulted in a harder (more sporty) ride?

I have 172K. Strut bushings, other front-end items, tires and motor mounts replaced ... not sure what suspension bushings are.

My cousin had a 86 BMW (325 something, I think). I could experience every bump and the accerator was very heavy to depress.

In my 93 940, I get tired of the "roaring" on the expressway ... it stops when I remove my foot from the accelator. I'm pretty sure the exhaust system is OK. I also feel every crack in the road. Tires about 33-35.

Probably won't replace the 940 right now ... but if I did, would need to stay in the same price range, and kinda used to having a wagon.
