Class 8 highway tractors have oil temp. gauges for the engine , trans, rear axles. These are business machines and their livlehoods depend on knowing if abnormal conditions exist,demand maintenance is never better than preventative maintenance.
I once brazed a fitting to the steel plate on the crankcase of a VW bus for an oil temp gauge, if the trans pan is steel you might consider the same thing, make sure it's protected from road hazards.
