I find that using a dummy countershaft makes refitting the layshaft a lot easier. Find a piece of rod or tube the same diameter as the countershaft and cut it to exactly the same length as the lay shaft. If the correct diameter rod isn't available, use something a bit smaller and wrap it in plastic tape until its the same diameter as the countershaft. Pushing the dummy shaft into the layshaft as the counetrshaft is pushed out keeps the needles in place too, so avoids the need to re-fit all those pesky needles and washers if they aren't going to be replaced.
