I agree with the second part of Alex's message.
I had an '84 240 and I experienced the same sort of symptoms that you describe. When the car was cold if I would give it too much throttle it would stall out, make a noise and then pick up and accelerate normally. It stopped this behavior only after installing a new AMM.
