I understand your frustration, but the Bosch 2.4 system is rather simple. Look at a Ford or GM engine from 1989 and make your own judgement.

The cold-start injector typically doesn't do anything until it gets REALLY cold (like, below freezing). if you are in the US, there's no way it's cold enough this time of year to make it come on. So I don't think your problem is because the cold-start injector is not coming on.

Did you replace the ECU temp sensor or the gauge temp sensor (they are different)? Have you been able to decide if this is a fuel or spark/timing problem (both can cause the symptoms you describe). Are there any holes in the corrogated plastic air pipe between the filter box and the throttle body? have you checked for vacuum leaks, including at the canister? Is the distributor cap OK (too much black crud and the spark gets shorted out or routed to the wrong plug)? Is the crank sensor on top of the transmission bell housing come loose or have the wires become frayed? Could the fuel filter be clogged up? These are all problems that can cause the car to run like crap and not get a code stored in the computer.

Backfiring through the intake manifold is a good way to destroy the AMM, so that might be bad also. But usually the computer would have a code for that.

Just some ideas.
