1989 240GL

I recent bought a 2nd hand '89 240GL. The engine trys to self-destruct when it is started cold. It is extremely lean to the point of back firing and spitting into the inlet manifold. Part of the problem is the cold start valve is not injecting at start up. The engine has to be revved to over 2000 to get it to idle. The idle speed is around 1200. Which is rediculous. It's also very lean and doesn't want to get going, but when it does get going it's got heaps of poke. So far I've replaced the Fuel ECU (LH 2.4), Ignition ECU ($2700!), the idle control valve, coolant temperature sensor, oxygen sensor, fuel pressure regulator, spark plugs and reset the butterfly. All the ancillary sensors have been checked and double checked for wiring faults. The only problem that the diagnostic unit ever gave was a faulty injector message. That hasn't happen again, and the car goes like a rocket when it's warm. The only oddity left is the speedo needle doesn't quite reach 0. According the the Bentley service manual the needle should twitch a little bit when the engine first starts. This is supposed to mean that the ignition system is working. Which it does, beacuse the engine revs to over 6000 with no trouble. There is some odd burn marks near the battery. I suspect it may have had a battery explosion at some stage. With a 2nd hand car how can you what happened? Nevertheless, I cannot find any kind of mechanical or electrical fault with it and it still trys to destroy itself when starting cold. My Dad has been a Volvo devotee since 1972, right now were both getting a bit ticked off. This Bosch LH 2.4 system is so over engineered it's not funny. Does anyone have any clues?
