Weird Ignition Timing 140-160

I installed a XR3000 ignition system about 6 months ago and after it was installed I was able to run the timing upto 20deg at 1000rpm and 30deg with vac advance at 1000rpm. This reading was obtained with a standard timing light and a dial timing light and the readings were the same.

Naturally I thought that the readings were wrong and I had installed something out of alignment. It didn't ping unless i used a lower grade fuel (normally 98 but i had to do 2 tanks of 91 so i dropeed the timing 5 deg while using it and it ran fine)

I've just installed a new cam (25/65, 270deg) and steel timing gears. I purposely didn't mark anything to do witht he timing and lined everything up as per the factory manual and set it up for what I thought would be between 15 and 20 deg of advance (hard line up with optical pickup)

On startup I quickly used my timing light to check the timing at 2000rpm and it read 42 deg with vac advance (dial timing light). It wouldn't run to well with less adance so i left it while it warmed up.

Could something be well out of alignment in the dizzy after the conversion or am I really running this much advance?

Thanks!!!!
