240 No acceleration/ Fault Code 200 1992

My girlfriend's 1992 240GL engine light came on and the accelerator lost most power. The fault code that blinks is 1-4-4 "Load signal missing (from LH control unit). Control unit assumes the engine is at full load". The car only has 88,000 miles on it and everything else "coded" fine. She's afraid to drive it until we know exactly what this means and what to do about it. Any help is most appreciated.
