I have nver heard of any "general temp setting". Vent temp depends on many factors such ambiant temperature, humidity, engine rpm, and of course the condition of your system. I would not add anything until the problem is diagnosed, besides you need to know if your car has been converted to R134a or is still on R12. Make sure whatever is added is compatible with what you have. Better yet before adding anything get the system performing properly then think about additives. I don't think there are any additives that can make an AC system work better or fix a broken one. You may be just low on freon.
I just converted my 88 740 to r134 as result of a compressor failure. Vent temps are low 40's with ambiant in the 90's. You can get slightly better if still using R12.
