cutting springs? does this work?

Just thinking about lowering my 90 740ti sedan. I have read that you can cut your own springs. Is this possible? Is it worth it? Or just pay for new ones? Any recommended riding heights? I don't want to get bucked out of my seat. I have 205/55/16 on now my up grade later. Just want to take out that huge gap in the wells. The front seems to be OK! Should I do it too?
Thanks
