Shayne is on the right track with the bushings.
However, if the box is the problem, ditch it.
Steering boxes and differentials are not to be opened up and toyed with by mere mortals. Just find another and bolt it in.
In our ice racing experience, a bad steering box usually cracked.
If everything stayed inside, they worked pretty well.
