I havn't had to fool with the Volvo EGR setup (not required in my area) but I checked the manual and it's the same as other vehicles, take it off , and whack the plunger with a soft mallet a number of times to break the carbon loose and shake it out good.

chemical cleaners not recomended( although I've used them in extreme cases i.e.probably going to the dumpster, they can damage the unit)
