Water pump replacement

'C' -- Don't know what year your Volvo is or what model, but looking at your little picture in the upper right corner, I'm guessing a late 240 with the B230? If so, here are some things to think about:

Water pump goes OK. You might want to replace your main radiator hoses and thermostat at the same time if you don't know their histories. Make sure you press up hard on the water pump body to squash the upper round gasket on the pump against the cylinder head overhang while you tighten the mounting nuts and bolts. Otherwise you'll get a leak here in a year or so. Be careful with the ring gasket which slips over the pipe which comes out the back of the water pump body. (This pipe feeds coolant ['heatant'?] to the heater core in the cabin.) This gasket sometimes mounts crookedly or gets pinched as the pipe is reinserted into the back of the water pump.

Timing belt -- Think about replacing the tensioner at the same time if you don't know its history. If indeed you've got the B230, you'll need to pull off the crankshaft accessory belt pulley (a.k.a. 'harmonic balancer') to get the lower belt guard off to enable you to remove the timing belt. There are several ways to loosen the bolt holding the harmonic balancer onto the end of the crankshaft. Check the archives. I advocate the 'rope trick'.

Assuming you've got a 240, you may want to put on a special metal plate on the back end of the cylinder head. IPD sells this, and it's purpose is to retain the plastic plug which has a habit of blowing out if your crankcase ventilation/flame trap system gets clogged.

Check the archives for more tidbits.
